Paris, Kentucky was then in Clark County but is now in Bourbon County-the heart of bluegrass country in eastern Kentucky just north of Lexington. It's about two days ride on horseback south of the Ohio River.

Mary's family lines

Mary came from a aristocratic southern family going back to England on her father's side and Virginia on her mother's side. The Darnalls of Kentucky had many members fighting for the Confederacy. She greatly feared having her sons fighting on the other side of the line. She heartily resisted giving up her sons to the war effort.
