Charles Chesterfield "CC" Smart

CC Homesteads in the Oklahoma Panhandle

Charles Chesterfield "CC" Smart (see picture on horse) was the first Smart to move to the Oklahoma Panhandle. He went to Range from Clinton in 1903, at the age of 24, where he homesteaded. He built a sod house on his property there.

CC Marries Bessie Mae Town

The next year, he married Bessie Town at Comalty near Elk City and took her back to Range where they lived and raised eight children. Bessie was born in Missouri to James Perry Town and Martha Helen West.

The Charles Smart Family

In 1912, they sold the homestead and bought land on Hackberry Creek where they built a rock house.

During WW II, Charles worked at an Air Force Base in Liberal, Kansas.

In 1948, after the war, they moved back to Hardesty, Oklahoma.

Bessie died there on December 19th, 1956 at the age of 71. CC died less than six months later, on June 6th, 1957. He was 78.
