John as Capt. of 1852 Wagon Train?

Two Letters by a Pioneer from Arkansas - Oregon Historical Quarterly V. 45, No. 3

The first letter mentions John Winn as captain of the train/company.

The first letter mentions wagon train passengers (with John Winn later made captain of the train/company) on a journey from West Fork, Arkansas to the Willamette Valley, Oregon at the time John Hensley Winn moved from AR to OR (substantiated by his OR Donation Land Claim). <Link>

The letter was written by Wilson Tigard, formerly of West Fork, to his relatives living in West Fork. John Winn also lived in West Fork.

At the time, John was married to Eliza Craig, whose parents are mentioned in the letter as on the wagon train. .)

There is no proof that John Hensley Winn was the John Winn and Capt. John Winn of an 1852 wagon train. Evidence in the letter would suggest so, but there is no direct proof. There is no resolution yet (July 2012).
